Its Significance
Most important day of Pitru Paksha — for all ancestors, unknown/missed tithis, Amavasya deaths; and commonly also for Purnima and natural Chaturdashi deaths.
Shraddha Karma Vidhi
- 1Take a morning bath (snan), observe shaucha, and wear clean white or yellow clothes; take sankalpa with gotra and ancestor names.
- 2In Aparahna Kaal (preferably starting in Kutup / Rauhina), perform Pind Daan or the simplified home offering as per family tradition.
- 3Set aside food for crow, cow, and dog; feed Brahmins and give dakshina to receive blessings.
- 4Offer til-jal tarpan, pray for peace of the Pitrs, and conclude the rite calmly.
The Do's and Don'ts
Dos
- Light a diya for ancestors and keep the home sattvic
- Perform daan, seva, and charity in ancestors’ name
- Perform Shraddha / Tarpan in Aparahna (from Kutup–Rauhina until Aparahna ends)
Don'ts
- Prefer not to do Shraddha in Rahu Kaal; main window is Aparahna / Kutup–Rauhina
- Avoid quarrels, anger, and conflict
- Avoid new festive clothes, celebrations, weddings, and haircuts during Pitru Paksha
- Avoid meat, alcohol, and tamasic food
