Location: Madurai City, on the banks of the Vaigai River
According to Hindu tradition, Goddess Meenakshi, an incarnation of Parvati, married Lord Shiva at this sacred place. The present temple structure was mainly rebuilt during the Nayak dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries. The temple is also famous for its annual Meenakshi Tirukalyanam festival.
