The mithai box is already on the table. Your sister has sent three WhatsApp messages asking what time you'll reach. And you're quietly checking if you can leave office a little early.
That's Bhai Dooj 2026, and it falls on Wednesday, 11 November 2026. For New Delhi, the tika window is 1:10 PM to 3:20 PM, and the Dwitiya tithi ends at 3:53 PM. This guide covers the date, the muhurat, the old stories, a simple puja vidhi, a samagri checklist and a few small things families often forget.
It's the last day of the five-day Diwali 2026 celebrations, and usually the softest one. No crackers, no big shopping. Just a thali, a tika and a long lunch.

What Is Bhai Dooj?
Bhai Dooj is the festival of brothers and sisters. A sister applies tika on her brother's forehead, does his aarti, feeds him sweets and prays for his long, healthy life. The brother gives a gift and promises to stand by her.
The festival has many names. It's Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Phonta in Bengal, Bhai Bij in Gujarat, Bhai Tika in Nepal and Yama Dwitiya in the south. Wikipedia's page on Bhai Dooj lists a few more.
Why Is Bhai Dooj Celebrated?

There isn't one single story. Different families tell different ones, and all of them end in the same place: a sister's blessing.
Yama and Yamuna
This is the one most grandmothers tell. Tradition says Yamuna Ji invited her brother Yamraj again and again, but he was always busy. On Kartik Shukla Dwitiya he finally went.
She welcomed him with a tika, a lamp and a meal she had cooked herself. Yamraj was so touched that he gave a boon. Any brother who gets a tika from his sister on this day, and eats the food she makes, is blessed with a long life.
That's why the day is also called Yama Dwitiya.
Krishna and Subhadra
Many families, especially in Maharashtra, tell this one. After Shri Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura, he visited his sister Subhadra. She welcomed him with lamps, sweets and a tika on his forehead.
Some people see this as the first Bhai Dooj welcome, a sister's way of saying "I'm glad you're safe."
Nandivardhan and Sudarshana
In Jain tradition, the day is linked to King Nandivardhan, the elder brother of Lord Mahavira. After Mahavira's nirvana, he was heartbroken. His sister Sudarshana invited him home and comforted him. Families who follow this story remember the day as one of care for a grieving brother.
Bhai Dooj 2026 Tika Muhurat in New Delhi
Tradition prefers the afternoon for the tika. This part of the day is called Aparahna. Here's how Wednesday looks for New Delhi.
Event | Time (New Delhi, 11 November) |
|---|---|
Sunrise | 6:40 AM |
Tika muhurat (Aparahna) | 1:10 PM to 3:20 PM |
Dwitiya tithi ends | 3:53 PM |
Sunset | 5:29 PM |
Why do some websites show 10 November?
Lunar tithis don't begin at midnight. Dwitiya starts at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, 10 November, but in New Delhi it carries through the afternoon tilak period on 11 November. Some calendars use another rule or location, so they show the earlier day. We've followed Drik Panchang for New Delhi, which places Bhai Dooj on 11 November.
Different timings on different sites? You may see 1:17 PM to 3:29 PM or 1:31 PM to 3:45 PM somewhere. Panchangs calculate for different cities and use slightly different methods. We've used the New Delhi window.
Living abroad? Drik Panchang lists Bhai Dooj on Tuesday, 10 November for the USA, Canada, the UK and the UAE. Don't convert India's timings. Look up the window for your own city.
Running late?
It happens. Trains get delayed, the traffic is bad, someone can't find the roli. The tithi runs till 3:53 PM, so you still have about 30 minutes after the window closes. If you miss even that, many families say a tika given with love that afternoon still counts. Ask your pandit ji if you want to be sure.
Gods Worshipped on Bhai Dooj and Their Aartis
Bhai Dooj puja is simple. Families remember a few deities, depending on their own custom.
Deity | When | What they stand for | Aarti link |
|---|---|---|---|
Ganesh Ji | At the start of the puja | A smooth, obstacle-free beginning | |
Chitragupta Ji | Same day, mostly in Kayastha homes | Pen, ink, honest accounts | |
Shri Krishna | Optional, as per family custom | The brother who is always there |
If you'd like to sing along while you do the aarti, you can open the aartis on Mobile Mandir and keep the lyrics on your phone screen. Handy when the whole family is standing around the thali.
Bhai Dooj Puja Vidhi at Home, Step by Step
This is a simple version that works in most homes. Change it to match your family's custom. Where your elders do things differently, follow them.
1
Pick Your Time. Plan the tika inside the 1:10 PM to 3:20 PM window if you're in Delhi. Elsewhere, check your city's panchang the day before. Tell the brother the time too, so he doesn't arrive at 3:45.
2
Clean Up and Set the Space. Bathe and wear clean clothes. Wipe the spot where the brother will sit. Many homes make a small square with rice flour or a simple rangoli.
3
Prepare the Thali. Place roli, akshat, a diya, a small lamp of ghee, mithai, a dry coconut (gola), kalawa and flowers on the thali. Keep a glass of water close by.
4
Begin with Ganesh Ji. Light the diya and incense. Offer a little roli and akshat to Ganesh Ji and fold your hands. Then remember Yamuna Ji and Yamraj with a short prayer.
5
Seat Your Brother. Ask him to sit facing east or north, as your family does. Many families place a clean handkerchief or cap on his head before the tika.
6
Apply the Tika. Put roli on his forehead, then a few grains of akshat on top. Some families tie a kalawa on his wrist. Pray silently for his health and safety.
7
Do the Aarti. Circle the thali clockwise in front of him three times or seven times, whichever your family follows. Sing a short aarti. Keep the diya away from his clothes and your dupatta.
8
Offer Mithai and Gola. Feed him a bit of mithai with your own hand. In many homes, the sister also gives a dry coconut. The brother touches her feet if she's older, or takes her blessings if she's younger.
9
Exchange Gifts and Eat Together. The brother gives his gift. Then sit and eat the meal together. As per the Yama story, the brother is meant to eat the food his sister has made.
Bhai Dooj Puja Samagri Checklist

Incense sticks and a matchbox

How to Prepare the House
You don't need a big clean-up. Diwali already did most of the work. A little planning on the day before is enough.
When | What to do |
|---|---|
A few days before | Pick the gift. If you're travelling, book tickets early. Dwitiya begins on Tuesday afternoon, so arriving that day is safer. |
Tuesday, 10 November | Buy mithai and flowers. Arrange the thali. Plan the menu. |
Wednesday morning | Bathe, wipe the puja space, prepare lunch. |
Before 1:10 PM | Set the chowki or seat. Light incense. Call the family to the table. |
1:10 PM to 3:20 PM | Tika, aarti, mithai, gifts. |
After 3:53 PM | Lunch, photos, family video call for those who couldn't come. |
Traditions, Regional Celebrations and Safety Tips
Every home does Bhai Dooj a little differently, and that's fine. A few customs you may come across:
Bengal (Bhai Phonta): Sisters apply a mark of sandalwood paste on the brother's forehead and say a short prayer. Many families keep a fast until the tika is done, and then serve a big spread.
Maharashtra and Goa (Bhau Beej): The brother sits on a low seat, the sister does his aarti, and a festive meal follows.
Nepal (Bhai Tika): Sisters apply a long tika in seven colours, as mentioned on Wikipedia's page.
Mathura and Braj: Many devotees bathe in the Yamuna on this day because of the Yama and Yamuna story.
Brothers who live far away: Many families do the tika over a video call and send roli, akshat and a small gift by courier. Follow what feels right for your family.
Diya safety: Keep diyas away from curtains, dupattas and children's hands. Put them on a steel plate.
Eco tip: Use natural roli and haldi, and fresh flowers instead of plastic ones. Don't throw puja leftovers into a river or drain. A potted plant is a good home for them.
Gifts: Choose a modest gift if that's what your budget allows. A handwritten note or a favourite dish often means more than the price tag.
Travel tip: Roads and trains are busy around Diwali. Leave early and keep the thali items packed in a small bag.
Do | Don't |
|---|---|
Apply the tika inside the Aparahna window if you can. | Don't stress if you miss it. Do what you can with love. |
Wear clean clothes and keep the thali neat. | Don't leave a lit diya near cloth or paper. |
Let the brother eat what his sister has made. | Don't turn the day into a gift competition. |
Call or video-call a sibling who can't visit. | Don't skip the blessing from elders in the house. |
Follow your family's custom where it's different. | Don't argue over small differences. Every family has its own way. |
A Warm Wish for Bhai Dooj 2026
Thank you for reading, and for caring enough to get the small things right. Bhai Dooj 2026 is a short festival, but families remember it for years. The thali, the teasing, the fight over the last piece of mithai.
So take your time. Apply the tika, say a quiet prayer and enjoy the lunch. If you can, start the day with a few minutes of Naam Jaap or an online temple darshan. It sets a calm mood before the family arrives.
