About
Khatu Shyam Ji is the revered divine form of Barbarika, the grandson of Bhima and the son of Ghatotkacha from the Mahabharata era. He was a mighty and highly skilled warrior who possessed extraordinary powers and devotion to Lord Krishna. Barbarika had received a unique boon that he would always support the weaker side in any battle. Before the Mahabharata war, Lord Krishna tested his commitment and realized that his participation would make the war endless and unbalanced. To maintain dharma, Krishna asked for his head as a sacrifice. Barbarika willingly offered his head in devotion. Pleased with his supreme sacrifice and faith, Lord Krishna blessed him that in the Kaliyuga he would be worshipped in his form as “Shyam” and would be known as the protector of devotees. Khatu Shyam Ji is widely worshipped in Rajasthan, especially at the famous Khatu Shyam Temple. He is lovingly called “Hare Ka Sahara” (Support of the Defeated), as devotees believe he helps those who are helpless or losing in life. People offer prayers, bhajans, and seva to seek his blessings for peace, success, and fulfillment of wishes.
